Why study this course?

Course Overview

Do you enjoy reading widely and regularly for pleasure? Do you enjoy analysing poetry, novels, and plays? Do you like exploring the ideas raised by authors from different periods or parts of the world? If you answered yes to these questions, then you will find this subject extremely rewarding both on a personal and academic level. As well as enjoying a wide range of engaging and stimulating novels, plays and poems, you will also develop your ability to express informed, considered and opinions both verbally and in the written form.

What will I study?

You will study eight texts, including Shakespeare, a range of novels, poetry and plays, comprising of both classics and works by contemporary writers. You will also have the opportunity to choose your own texts for the coursework element of the course.

How is this course assessed?

One 3 hour exam, worth 40%, one 2 hour and 30 minute exam, worth 40%, and coursework worth 20%.

What can I study with this course?

A Level English Literature complements many other subjects. It can be studied alongside English language and film studies, as well as other humanities and social science subjects. However, it works equally well with sports or health and social care, as well as the sciences, art, business or IT.

Specific entry requirements for this course

At least five GCSE grades 9 to 6, including English Literature.

A-Level entry requirements

At least four 5s at GCSE.
Your English and maths GCSEs must be at least grade 4.

BTEC entry requirements

At least five 4s at GCSE. A grade 4 in math, English language, or literature, and a grade 3 in the other subjects is required.
