Physics is the study of the fundamental forces in the universe and how they interact with each other and with matter. If you are interested in the universe, how it works and how it began, then physics is for you. You will have the opportunity to visit universities and the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva.
What will I study?
Through a combination of both theory and practical sessions, you will learn about: mechanics, subatomic particles, waves, materials, nuclear physics, thermal physics and electricity. You will also study an optional topic where you can choose from: astrophysics, medical physics, turning points in physics, electronics or engineering physics.
How is this course assessed?
Three, equally weighted, 2 hour exams and required practicals.
What can I study with this course?
Because of its emphasis on critical thinking, analysis and mathematical skills, physics complements most other subjects. Many students study it with mathematics and the other sciences whilst others use it to balance out arts or humanities subjects to give a more rounded portfolio of qualifications.
Where does this qualification lead?
All sciences are open to you after studying physics. It also leads to qualifications including medicine and nursing along with education and research. Being the most mathematical of the sciences, physics can be a base for careers as diverse as astronomer, actuary, engineer, analyst and economist.
